As we drove up the winding driveway, our excitement increased with every turn. We reached the top of the driveway to be greeted with a beautiful home and a gorgeous mountain view. Initially, we didn’t even have interest in the home itself, but spent a good 15 minutes walking around the home to take in the fresh air (after an 11 hour car ride!) and views of the mountains surrounding us. As I said in the title: unparalleled. We eventually unpacked the car and made our way into the home – and again were blown away. The pictures online do not do it justice. A gorgeous kitchen, beautiful bedrooms, and plenty of places to unwind with a view of the mountains. I’d have to say our favorite place to relax was on the couch on the outdoor, covered porch. With a glass (or 2!) of wine, looking out onto the cities from the top of this mountain top, life was good! We were able to find a handful of places to hike that were no further than an hour from the property, with recommendations by Harold. Speaking of Harold, you could not ask for a better host!! Made us feel so welcome and gave local suggestions for both food and attractions, most of which we did and had a great time! The home is decorated with gorgeous canvases featuring pictures he took! Be sure to grab one of his calendars before you leave!
If you’re thinking about booking this property – do it! It books up fast, and for good reason. There is not one regret you will have staying here!

My wife and I were looking for a house in the TriCities area to stay while she accompanied me on a work trip. When the search results first returned the Watauga Highlands it seemed to meet our needs… a private house a few miles from downtown Johnson City with full amenities. The pictures were stunning, but surely they had just hired a talented photographer. It described a great view, but I had seen many good views in that area before and assumed it was hyperbole.
However, as my wife and I approached the steep limestone drive and looked ahead up the path, we thought we had made a wrong turn. The property we entered felt grandiose and the beauty we saw was breathtaking. We ascended the steep and lengthy drive and arrived the veranda. The only thing initially noticeable was the view. No pictures or description of the mountainous span do it justice.
Once we realized we were still on planet earth we were greeted by Harold, the host. Harold made us feel we had always belonged, and he will make you feel the same. He exudes a humble confidence that tells you he is blessed, and now you are too, to simply experience this stately land.
And Harold is a thoughtful, gracious host. He provided us all the information we needed and showed us around. The house is worthy of Architectural Digest. It is a fully featured home with a contemporary style reminiscent of video clips I have seen of a first family enjoying a relaxing moment at Camp David.
The kitchen is modern and contains everything a group needs. The beds are comfortable, and the rooms are luxury hotel clean. Three bedrooms and a pull out couch was overstock for my wife and me. A large family or two, could stay here comfortably.
I have been reluctant to provide a review even marginally worthy of the Watauga Highlands, simply because I am selfish. But my guilt could no longer allow me to remain hushed. If you are fortunate enough to visit this property, you will not be disappointed.
